Why these pieces belong on the same altar

Lakshmi doesn't get worshipped alone on Diwali night. Ganesh goes first, because he clears what's in the way before anything else begins, and that order is why almost every Diwali altar in India carries both.

The Shree Yantra is the form of Lakshmi herself. Nine triangles interlock around one centre point, with two lotus rings around them and a square boundary outside that. It's the piece that stays on your altar after Diwali is over.

The Ganesh Yantra holds the Ganesh bij mantra inside the same square frame. You keep it to the left of the Shree Yantra as you look at the altar.

The kamalgatta mala is the one traditionally used for Lakshmi mantras, because the lotus seed is her own flower. That's why Diwali jaap is counted on kamalgatta in most households, and why it's in this kit instead of a Rudraksha mala.

Setting it up on Diwali night

Clean the altar shelf in the morning and lay a fresh red or yellow cloth on it.

Rinse both yantras in plain water, or in a little raw milk mixed with water and gangajal, then rinse again and wipe them dry.

Set them facing east or north, so you're facing east or north when you sit in front of them. Ganesh on the left, Lakshmi on the right.

Light a ghee diya and a dhoop at your puja muhurat. Offer kumkum, akshat and a flower.

Chant Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah 108 times on the kamalgatta mala. Start at the bead next to the guru bead and work your way around. When you reach the guru bead, stop. Turn the mala around if you want a second round, and don't cross over it.

Say plainly what you want the year to bring. Keep it specific, like clearing one loan or steadying your monthly income.

After Diwali, a diya on Friday evening and a few minutes with the mala is enough. Friday belongs to Shukra and to Lakshmi.

Want a bigger centrepiece?

Want the 3D version? Our Brass Meru Shree Yantra (3 x 3 inch base, about 1.25 inch high) is Rs. 2,499 on its own; add it to your order alongside this kit, or pick the Griha Pravesh Diwali Kit, which already includes it. The Meru stands upright on its own base, which is what makes it work in a proper mandir.
