Lagna means your rising sign, the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. For most gemstones it settles the question. Lehsunia works differently, and the house Ketu occupies is what decides. If you don't know your lagna, start with which gemstone should I wear.

What cat's eye is

The real stone is chrysoberyl, a beryllium aluminium oxide, and it's one of the hardest gem materials in regular use at 8.5 on the Mohs scale. Only diamond, corundum and a couple of rarities beat it.

The colour runs from honey and golden brown through to a greenish grey. Trade names describe the best material as honey colour or milk and honey.

What makes it a cat's eye is chatoyancy. Fine parallel needle-like inclusions inside the crystal reflect light into a single bright band, and that band is the whole point of the stone. Move the stone and the band moves with it, sliding like a slit pupil. On a fine example the band is razor sharp, dead straight and centred, and it stays sharp as you turn the stone. A weak band that looks fuzzy, broken or off-centre drops the value sharply, and traditional practice treats a stone with a broken band as unfit for astrological wear. How to tell a real band from a glass one is covered in the fake detection section further down, and it's the single most useful thing on this page.

Sri Lanka gives the finest material. Brazil and southern India also produce it. A good lehsunia needs a sharp centred band, an even dome, and a colour with real warmth in it.

The planet behind it

Ketu is the south lunar node, the point opposite Rahu where the Moon's path crosses the ecliptic going south. Like Rahu, it has no physical body. It's a calculated point in space, and it owns no rashi.

That last fact matters more than anything else on this page. Every visible graha owns one or two signs, and that ownership tells an astrologer which houses the planet runs for a given lagna, which in turn tells them whether its stone will help. Ketu offers nothing of the sort. It works through the house it sits in, the planets it's joined with, and the lord of the sign it falls in, which astrologers call its dispositor. Read those three and you have Ketu. Skip them and you're guessing. The Ketu transit calculator shows where it's sitting right now.

Ketu governs detachment, moksha, research, medicine, occult knowledge, sudden events, skill that arrives without training, isolation, and the loss of interest in worldly things. It's often described as a headless body, which is a useful image. Ketu acts without deliberating. It gives you sudden competence in something you never studied, and it quietly removes your appetite for things you worked years to get.

Strengthening Ketu changes a few specific things. Research and specialist work get sharper. Medical, surgical, pharmaceutical and diagnostic careers do well. Spiritual practice deepens and actually holds. Long-running confusion about what you're doing with your life tends to resolve, often by you simply stopping something.

Ketu makes life lighter by taking things away, and the things it takes are sometimes things you still wanted. People who want a promotion and a bigger house are rarely asking for Ketu, even when they think they are.

Who should wear it

This section is organised by Ketu's house placement. Count from your lagna, so a Taurus lagna with Ketu in Libra has Ketu in the 6th house. Ketu always sits exactly opposite Rahu, six houses away. Pull your chart from the free kundli tool if you don't have it to hand.

Ketu in the 1st house

Ketu on the lagna affects your body, your sense of self and how you come across. It often gives detachment from your own appearance and periods of feeling unmoored. Lehsunia here deepens that. Verdict: avoid.

Ketu in the 2nd house

Money, family and speech. Ketu here brings irregular earnings and a habit of saying too little. Wearing lehsunia tends to increase the detachment from family. Verdict: avoid.

Ketu in the 3rd house

An upachaya house, one that improves over time, and a good placement for Ketu. Courage, skill with hands, and communication all strengthen. Verdict: recommended. Artists, technicians and performers often do well with lehsunia here.

Ketu in the 4th house

Home, mother, property and peace of mind. Ketu here disturbs domestic settledness and often means time spent away from home. Verdict: avoid. The stone usually widens the distance.

Ketu in the 5th house

Children, education and intelligence. A hard placement, classically linked with difficulty around children and with sharp but narrow intellect. Lehsunia can help a researcher and can deepen the trouble elsewhere. Verdict: conditional, strict trial, and only after a chart check.

Ketu in the 6th house

Enemies, debt, disease and competition. Ketu is strong here and cuts through opposition. This is one of the classic good placements. Verdict: recommended. Useful for people in litigation, competitive exams or chronic illness.

Ketu in the 7th house

Marriage and partnership. Ketu here brings emotional distance inside the marriage and sometimes a spiritually inclined spouse. Lehsunia almost always increases the distance. Verdict: avoid, particularly if the marriage is already strained.

Ketu in the 8th house

A dusthana, one of the troubled houses, governing longevity, sudden events and hidden knowledge. Ketu here gives genuine occult ability along with an unsettled inner life. Verdict: avoid. Some traditional astrologers consider Ketu well placed in the 8th for spiritual work, so an experienced reading can override this for a serious practitioner.

Ketu in the 9th house

Fortune, father, dharma and long travel. A respected placement for Ketu, giving real spiritual depth and often a guru. It can strain the relationship with the father. Verdict: mixed. Usable when the 9th lord is strong and you want the spiritual side. Skip it if your goals are material.

Ketu in the 10th house

Career and standing. Ketu here brings detachment from ambition, which is awkward in a working life. People often change profession suddenly. Verdict: mixed, leaning negative. Consider it only for research, medicine or teaching careers.

Ketu in the 11th house

Gains, networks and elder siblings. An upachaya house and a strong position for Ketu. Income arrives without much chasing. Verdict: recommended.

Ketu in the 12th house

Loss, expenditure, isolation, foreign residence and moksha. This is Ketu's own natural territory and one of its best houses. Spiritual practice and life abroad both do well. Verdict: recommended for anyone whose aims are spiritual or research-based. Less useful if you're chasing income.

A general note. If Ketu sits with the Moon, be careful. Ketu with the Moon can flatten the emotional range, and strengthening Ketu there tends to deepen the flatness. The same caution applies to Ketu with the Sun.

Benefits

Research and specialist work

Ketu is the graha of going deep into one narrow thing. Scientists, doctors, surgeons, pharmacists, analysts, forensic workers and academics see the clearest effect. Work that needed sustained focus starts coming easily.

Protection from sudden loss

Ketu governs the abrupt event, and a fitted lehsunia is traditionally worn to blunt that. Business people in volatile trades have used it for this reason for a very long time.

Spiritual practice

Meditation, mantra japa, and any serious sadhana deepen under a well-placed Ketu. The restlessness that makes people quit practice after two weeks tends to subside.

Occult and healing work

Astrology, ayurveda, homeopathy, tantra and healing practices all sit in Ketu's territory. Practitioners report sharper intuition about what is actually wrong with someone.

Health

Ketu is linked with skin problems, undiagnosed complaints, sudden fevers and conditions doctors struggle to name. A supportive lehsunia often correlates with a long-running mystery complaint finally getting identified. Keep your doctor in the loop.

During Ketu mahadasha

Ketu's mahadasha runs seven years in the Vimshottari system. For people with Ketu well placed, lehsunia steadies that period and keeps the detachment productive. See gemstone for dasha for how dasha timing changes what a stone does.

Who should avoid it, and the symptoms if you wear it wrongly

Avoid lehsunia if Ketu sits in your 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th or 8th house. Avoid it if Ketu is conjunct the Moon and your mental state is already fragile. Avoid it if you're already wearing ruby, pearl or yellow sapphire. And avoid it if what you actually want is more money, a better marriage or a bigger role at work, because Ketu isn't the graha that supplies those.

What a wrong lehsunia feels like. The first sign is usually emotional flatness. Things you cared about on Monday feel pointless by Friday, with no sadness attached to it, just a shrug. People describe it as watching their own life from the next room.

Then detachment from people. You stop replying to messages. Family starts asking what's wrong and you can't explain it. Sleep goes light and dreams turn strange and symbolic.

Physically, watch for skin trouble appearing from nowhere, a rash or itching with no cause. Low undiagnosed fever. Stomach upset. Sudden dizziness. Some wearers report a buzzing in the ears or a sense of pressure at the back of the head.

Money and events turn abrupt. A deal cancels overnight. Someone leaves.

Two or more of these showing up clearly and repeating means take the stone off. Rinse it, wrap it in white cloth, and get your chart read before trying anything else.

The trial period

Carry the stone loose for a full month before you pay for a setting, wrapped in white cloth, under your pillow at night and in your pocket by itself during the day, with one written line each night. One question is specific to lehsunia. Ask yourself whether you still care about the things you cared about four weeks ago, and write a straight yes or no. If the answer turns to no across several days, that's the signal, and it's the one people talk themselves out of noticing. The full method and how to read the result are on gemstone side effects.

Ketu reactions are the easiest of all to miss, because detachment feels like clarity while it's happening. That's why the notes have to be written down.

Weight and how to work it out

Lehsunia's range is 3 to 6 ratti. Chrysoberyl is dense and acts strongly, so the range sits lower than gomed's.

Worked example. You weigh 58 kg. The thumb rule is one ratti per 10 kg, which gives 5.8 ratti, falling inside the range. One ratti is 0.91 carat, so 5.8 ratti comes to 5.28 carats, and a 5.25 carat stone works.

The conversion table, the 10 kg rule and what to do when your body weight lands outside a stone's band are on gemstone ratti weight.

Price climbs steeply with size on this stone, so if 6 ratti of good chrysoberyl is beyond your budget, buy 3 or 4 ratti of a sharp clean stone. Band quality matters more than carat weight here.

The full ritual, from the overnight soak to the lamp and the offerings, is on how to wear a gemstone. For lehsunia, face south west, the direction assigned to Ketu, light a sesame oil lamp, and offer a few grains of horse gram with grey or multicoloured flowers.

Why silver

Silver is cool and neutral and suits Ketu's quiet character. Avoid a plain gold setting, because gold belongs to the Sun and Ketu is the node that eclipses it. Panchdhatu holds a small amount of gold and is accepted, since the alloy balances the metals against each other.

Why the little finger

The little finger is called the Mercury finger. Ketu is traditionally given it because Ketu shares in Mercury's quick, detached intelligence. Keep the back of the setting open so the stone rests against your skin.

Why Tuesday or Thursday

Ketu has no weekday of its own, so tradition assigns it Mars's day or Jupiter's day, with Tuesday the more common choice. Wear it in the morning after a bath.

A common Ketu practice on the first day is to feed a dog or give food to someone in need. Ketu responds to giving things away more readily than to elaborate ritual.

Clean the stone with plain water and a soft cloth. Chrysoberyl is hard at 8.5 and takes daily wear well, so the cabochon dome stays bright for years with very little care.

Stones to keep away from lehsunia

Ketu is one of the two nodes that eclipse the Sun, so putting ruby and lehsunia on the same hand sets the Sun against the shadow that swallows it, and the usual result is that neither stone does its job. Ketu eclipses the Moon as well, and pearl with lehsunia tends to produce an unsettled mind and broken sleep. Jupiter governs growth, family, children and faith while Ketu withdraws from all four, so wearing yellow sapphire alongside it pulls a person in two directions at once.

Cat's eye pairs safely with blue sapphire, emerald, diamond and hessonite. Gomed and lehsunia together is a traditional combination for the Rahu and Ketu axis, though very few charts actually call for both. If you already wear one of the three hostile stones and you want to try lehsunia, remove the other stone, wait at least a week, then start the trial fresh. The full table of which stones clash with which sits on the gemstones hub.

How to spot a fake or treated stone

This is the most faked stone of the nine, because the cat's eye effect is easy to imitate and buyers judge by the band alone.

Fibre-optic glass

The commonest fake by a long way, sold openly in markets as cat's eye. Bundled glass fibres are cut across their length and polished into a dome, which produces a band. The giveaway is that the band is too perfect. On fibre-optic glass the band is a flat, chalky white stripe with hard edges that sits on the surface like paint, and it stays exactly the same width wherever you move the light. Look at the flat base of the cabochon under a loupe and you'll often see a honeycomb pattern of fibre ends, which settles it instantly. The material is also warm to the touch and light in the hand.

How a real chatoyant band behaves

On natural chrysoberyl the band has depth. It appears to float just under the dome. It narrows and sharpens as the light comes directly overhead, then widens and softens as you tilt away. Under two light sources it splits into two bands and merges back into one when you return to a single light.

Then there's the milk and honey test, which is what professionals use. Hold one light source over the stone. On a good cat's eye the half of the dome nearest the light stays honey coloured while the far half turns milky white, with the band separating the two. Glass doesn't do this.

Quartz cat's eye sold as chrysoberyl

This is substitution. Quartz cat's eye is a real stone and a legitimate upratna. It's far cheaper, softer at hardness 7, usually greyish green, and its band is broader and softer. Shops sell it as the real thing at real-thing prices all the time. Specific gravity settles it, chrysoberyl is about 3.7 against quartz at about 2.65, so the real stone feels noticeably heavier for its size.

Glass fibre doublets

A thin natural top cemented to a glass base. Check the side of the cabochon under magnification for a join line at the girdle.

What the certificate must say

Species as natural chrysoberyl, variety as cat's eye or cymophane, carat weight, measurements, specific gravity near 3.7, refractive index around 1.74 to 1.75, and a treatment line. The word chrysoberyl has to appear. A report that says only "cat's eye stone" could be describing glass, quartz or anything else with a band.

Species identification is the whole question on this stone, so for anything above about Rs 50,000, pay for a report that names chrysoberyl by mineral. Lehsunia is where people lose the most money to confident sellers.

What it costs

Price swings widely depending almost entirely on how sharp the band is. Figures below are per carat.

Commercial grade, dull greyish body, soft or off-centre band, often Indian or Brazilian material: Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per carat.

Good mid grade, decent honey or greenish colour with a clearly visible straight band: Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000 per carat.

Fine Ceylon, strong honey colour, razor-sharp centred band with a clean milk and honey effect: Rs 40,000 to Rs 1,50,000 per carat.

Top gem quality with a knife-edge band and ideal body colour crosses Rs 3,00,000 per carat and keeps going for large sizes. Collectors drive that end of the market, and no chart requires it.

What drives the price: the band first and by a wide margin, then body colour, then transparency of the dome, then size. A 2 carat stone with a perfect band costs more than a 6 carat stone with a lazy one, and for astrological purposes the sharp small stone is also the better buy. Price per carat rises steeply above 5 carats.

Realistically, a good 4 carat mid grade lehsunia in a silver ring lands somewhere between Rs 45,000 and Rs 1,20,000 including the setting. Fine Ceylon material at the same size runs several times that, which is why band quality at a smaller size is the sensible purchase.

Substitutes if you can't afford it

An upratna works more softly and needs more weight, usually one and a half to two times the main stone's ratti, and the full explanation sits on upratna substitute gemstones.

Quartz cat's eye is the accepted substitute for lehsunia and the only real one. It's genuine chatoyant quartz, usually greenish grey, with a softer and broader band than chrysoberyl. Hardness 7, so handle it more carefully. Wear 6 to 9 ratti in silver on the little finger, Tuesday or Thursday, with the same mantra and the same trial month.

Because quartz cat's eye is the recognised substitute, it's also what you'll be handed when you ask for the real thing. Check the weight in your palm and ask for a certificate naming the species. Paying substitute prices for a substitute is fine. Paying chrysoberyl prices for one means you've been robbed.

Fibre-optic glass has no planetary effect and no place in this list. Avoid it entirely.

How long before you see results

Lehsunia acts fast, usually inside the first week and sometimes within two or three days.

The first change is mental and quiet. Noise in the head drops. You find you can sit with one task for an hour. People in research or study work notice it as a sudden ease with material that was heavy last month.

The practical results on work, health and money build across two to three months, and the full effect settles by around six.

If nothing has happened after six weeks, look at three things. Whether the band on your stone is real and sharp, since a weak or imitation stone does nothing at all. Whether the weight is adequate. And whether Ketu is actually the graha your chart calls for, which is the most likely explanation and the easiest to check.

FAQ

Is cat's eye dangerous to wear?

It's strong and it acts quickly, which is why the trial month exists. The real risk comes from wearing it when Ketu sits in a house where it should be left alone, which means the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th or 8th. Check the chart and run the trial, and the risk is manageable.

Why is cat's eye worn on the little finger when other stones are not?

Ketu is assigned the Mercury finger in traditional practice, because Ketu shares in Mercury's quick and impersonal intelligence. It's the little finger for that reason.

My stone's band looks perfectly white and sharp at every angle. Is that good?

It's a warning sign. A band that never changes width or softness as you move the light is the signature of fibre-optic glass. On real chrysoberyl the band tightens under direct light and spreads as you tilt away.

Can I wear lehsunia with gomed?

Yes. Rahu and Ketu are two ends of one axis and their stones are compatible. Whether your chart needs both is a different question, and usually it doesn't.

Will cat's eye make me lose interest in my career and family?

Not when it's correctly prescribed. Ketu removes attachment to what's holding you back, and people misread that as general detachment. If you find yourself going flat about things you genuinely value during the trial, that's your answer and you should stop.

Is gold allowed for a cat's eye ring?

A plain gold setting isn't advised, since gold is the Sun's metal and Ketu is a node that eclipses the Sun. Use silver. Panchdhatu is acceptable.

Does a cracked or chipped cat's eye still work?

No. Traditional practice treats a cracked gem as unfit for wear, and on a cat's eye a chip usually breaks the band as well, which removes the only feature that matters.
